Reid has been a vegetarian for 11 years, and he hasn't had milk products for 5. Despite all that (or perhaps because of) Reid is a robust 6' 2" with energy to spare . Makes ya think don't it? On this page Reid would like to share his love of vegetables, his favourite places to eat, some home-tested recipes, enviromentally friendly news, and ask for feedback from fellow vegans and vegetarians.
This page is under constructive criticism.

FACT: Livestock contributes about 18% of all greenhouse gases that drive global warming - more than transportation! 87% of US farmland is devoted to raising animals for food. These animals consume more food than they yield, and also compete with us for clean drinking water.

Reid is a vegetarian (who is transitioning to veganism). He's not one of those radical types you understand - just the tender / no faces on his food / healthy colon type. Reid doesnt eat meat, or milk products, or fish, or MSG and the like. Still working on the eggs tho...touring can be tough without an all day breakfast, but they are sooo on their way out.

We like to say that we are 'on the path' when it comes to questions of diet, It really is a journey not a destination, and there is no room for judging here. We are just trying to make healthy, kind and environmentally sound choices, and ya gotta start somewhere, right?

Eating vegetarian is an amazingly effective way to do all of that and feel great too! Being on this 'path' means that Reid spends a lot of time in the kitchen, and the rest of the time driving around small towns looking for something to eat.
But, it is all worth it to feel good both physically and mentally.

Are you on the path?

important notice! most veggie cheese & even margerine has milk in it!

looking for veggie cheese? beware of 'casein' or 'caseinate". most fake cheeses actually contain milk, same with some non-dairy creamers* and most margerine. casein is a milk protien. the only truly vegan/dairy free cheeses we can find are tofutti slices, veganrella and soymage. everything else is merely lactose free. be sure to check the label when you buy. the same goes for margerine, the ingredient is called whey, but it is essentially cows milk. and you thought it wasn't butter....

but why consume dairy products anyway?

more on that thought...dairy farming that is

Earth Balance Margerine is vegan and tasty, but expensive. Presidence Choice has one called Celeb - the lactose free one is actually dairy free and only 2 bux where we shop.

we have found really good vegan cheese...and no joke, it MELTS!

#1: Veganrella - the mozzarella is especially good when grated on salad.
#2: Earth Island Vegan Gourmet - Mama's got mozza babeeee....

we just fell in love with: http://www.chreese.com/
seriously good vegan cheese sauce and vegan gravy...seems too good to be true almost.

what about B12? here

fave snack choices

tofutti 'marry me' ice cream bars

so good - drumsticks/ice cream cones - vanilla rules!

steamed edamame w/ sweet chilli sauce

que pasa corn chips with salsa, guacamole and nacho chreese

party mix - non-dairy dark chocolate chips & tamari almonds

kudos

solvent free drycleaning for all!

Nasty stuff usually, unbelievable what you are snorting (for weeks and months afterwards) when you get your clothes dry-cleaned.

But did you know that Victoria has an amazing solvent free dry cleaner? Elite Drycleaners on cook street gets the job done without gross chemicals seeping into the water and you. http://www.greendrycleaner.com/. maybe let your local cleaner know that you are interested in such a thing.

Quotes
My wife actually got worried about my drinking so much regular milk, you know, so she got me into rice milk and now soy milk, which I greatly enjoy. A soy mocha's a fine thing.
-Willie Nelson

I take vitamins daily, but just the bare essentials not what you'd call supplements. I try to stick to a vegan diet heavy on fruit, vegetables, tofu, and other soy products.
-Clint Eastwood

Since visiting the abatoirs of S. France I have stopped eating meat.
-Vincent Van Gogh

Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.
-Albert Einstein

If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian.
-Paul and Linda McCartney

I grew up in cattle country-that's why I became a vegetarian. Meat stinks, for the animals, the environment, and your health.
-K.D. Lang

Animals are my friends-and I don't eat my friends.
-George Bernard Shaw

Behind every beautiful fur, there is a story. It is a bloody, barbaric story.
-Mary Tyler Moore

Men hunt I think maybe because they have something wrong with thier own equipment and they need something else to shoot.
-Pamela Anderson

I don't eat chicken anymore. I won't eat it. I won't allow it in my house.
-Rodney Leonard -U.S. Poultry inspection

You put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit. If it eats the rabbit and plays with the apple, I'll buy you a new car.
-Harvey Diamond

The average age (longevity) of a meat eater is 63. I am on the verge of 85 and still work as hard as ever. I have lived quite long enough and am trying to die; but I simply cannot do it. A single beef-steak would finish me; but I cannot bring myself to swallow it. I am oppressed with a dread of living forever. That is the only disadvantage of vegetarianism.
-George Bernard Shaw

If you look at the course of western history you'll see that we're slowly granting basic rights to everyone. A long time ago only kings had rights. Then rights were extended to property-owning white men. Then all men. Then women. Then children. Then the mentally retarded. Now we're agonizing over the extension of basic rights to homosexuals and animals. We need to finally accept that all sentient creatures are deserving of basic rights. I define basic rights as this --the ability to pursue life without having someone else's will involuntarily forced upon you. Or, as the framers of the constitution put it, the ability to have "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". By what criteria can you justify denying basic rights to any living thing? Realize that by whatever criteria you employ someone could deny basic rights to you if they objected to your species, sexual preferences, color, religion, ideology etc. Would you eat your housecat, or force a mentally retarded child to ingest oven cleaner? If not, then why is it ok to eat cows and test products on sentient animals? I believe that to knowingly commit actions that cause or condone suffering is reprehensible in the extreme.I call upon you to be compassionate and treat others as you want to be treated. If you don't want to be beaten, imprisoned, mutilated, killed or tortured then you shouldn't condone such behavior towards anyone, be they human or not.

Go see Fast Food Nation!!!
Its a feature film, not a documentary (not for kids tho - older teens are fine)

If you have a friend or relative who still eats fast food crap - get them to watch it. You won't have to fight so hard to turn them towards better living.

What we really loved about it was that it wasn't pro-vegetarian really - more anti-factory farming and cruelty. Non judgemental, just provocative. Very well done.

Amazing kids cartoons associated with it as well.. the Meatrix!  Brilliant!

Vegetarians get first dibs on homes

MUMBAI, India-Forget pets, smokers or loud music at 2 a.m. House hunters here increasingly are being asked: "Do you eat meat?" If yes, the deal is off.

As this city of 16 million becomes the cosmopolitan main nerve of a booming Indian economy, real estate is increasingly intersecting with cuisine.

"Some people are very strict. They won't sell to a non-vegetarian even if he offers a higher price than a vegetarian," said real estate broker Norbert Pinto.

Vegetarianism is a centuries-old custom among Hindus, Jains and others in India, which claims to have some 220 million vegetarians.

House hunters are being asked "Veg or non-veg?" more openly, all the more so in Mumbai (also known as Bombay).

In constitutionally secular India, there's no bar to forming a housing society and making an apartment block exclusively Catholic or Muslim, Hindu or Zoroastrian.

Vegetarians say they too need segregation. Rejected home-seekers have mounted a slew of court challenges to the power of housing societies to discriminate. But last year, India's highest tribunal ruled the practice legal.
